Tips to Help Protect Your Kids from Identity Theft
Children aren’t immune to identity theft, so take these precautions.
How could your toddler, asleep in the nursery, live in another state and own her own home? Identity thieves.
Identity thieves know that often they can use children’s Social Security numbers for years before theft is discovered. While criminals can’t empty a baby’s nonexistent bank account, they can use the number to:
- Gain employment
- Establish lines of credit
- Open financial accounts
Who is at risk?
Any child can be a victim of identity theft. Studies have shown that identity thieves steal Social Security numbers that show little online activity, and sell them to adults.
Signs of identity theft=
Signs may include credit card bills in your child’s name, or a collection agency calling about accounts your child never opened. If you suspect that your child’s Social Security number has fallen into the wrong hands, you can order a credit report from Transunion (1-800-680-7289), Experian (1-888-397-3742) or Equifax (1-877-322-8228) and check for suspicious activity.
