Does Your Homeowners Policy Cover Your Boat?

Find out when, and how much.

Q. I recently purchased a 20-foot pontoon boat with a 50-horsepower (HP) engine for $10,000. I have auto and homeowners policies with MetLife Auto & Home. What kind of coverage do you offer for my boat?

A. Here’s the bottom line: Most auto policies provide zero boat coverage. Your homeowners policy provides liability coverage because your pontoon has only 50 HP. Boats with 51 HP or more and sailboats over 31 feet are excluded. Your homeowners policy provides $1,500 for watercraft, but that’s not enough for your $10,000 boat.

A separate boat owners insurance policy from MetLife Auto & Home not only gives you adequate liability and physical damage coverage but also covers your family’s medical payments if they are injured while using your boat.
