When to Add Your Teen Driver to Your Policy

In most cases you can wait until your new driver gets the permanent license. Find out which states have exceptions.

Q. My 15-year-old daughter will be getting her learner’s permit soon. Do I have to add her to my policy now?

A. Although raising a teen may be expensive, this is one situation where you get a break. You don’t need to add a young driver with a temporary permit to your MetLife Auto & Home auto policy; you can wait until your new driver gets their permanent license. Your policy covers your teen if they accidentally take out a mailbox while learning to drive, but you won’t pay any additional premium until they’re licensed. Keep in mind that some states have exceptions, including Kansas, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota, so review your policy for details.
