[Q] My car was struck in a hit-and-run while it was parked at work. Do I need a police report in order to make a claim? How long do I have to report it to MetLife Auto & Home?

[A] If it's clear that another vehicle hit your car, look to your collision insurance. If it was an object such as a shopping cart that struck your vehicle, comprehensive insurance may provide coverage. The caveat: You must file a proof of loss with MetLife Auto & Home within 91 days or within the number of days required by law. (Call your representative for details.) Do not get your vehicle repaired before contacting your insurance company because a claim adjuster may need to inspect the damage.

Police reporting requirements vary by state. In Maryland, for example, police respond to an accident only if there are injuries or if at least one of the vehicles is undrivable. Call your police department's nonemergency number to determine your state's policy.

[Q] Is the theft of a computer that is owned by a dependent child at college covered by the parents' homeowners policy?

[A] Dependent children under 21 and temporarily residing away from home, as in a school dorm, are usually covered by their parent's or guardian's homeowners policy. However, computer coverage on standard MetLife Auto & Home policies is limited to $5,000. If your student has a new laptop and pricey software, you may want to consider an optional Home Computer Endorsement. It provides up to $15,000 in coverage with a $50 deductible. It also covers more causes of loss, such as accidental dousing with a cup of coffee.
