Permission
to Drive?

to you -- or ask a question of your own!
[Q]
My daughter lives in Italy. When she visits, does she have
permission to drive our automobiles? She has been renting
vehicles.
[A]
Unless your daughter has something against your car (Maybe
she simply prefers a flashy new rental?), there's no insurance-related
reason that she can't drive your vehicle. Your MetLife Auto
& Home automobile
policy will cover you in the event of an accident, whether
you're driving the car or someone else (such as your daughter)
is driving the car with your permission. See your insurance
policy for restrictions.
[Q] If we insure our motorboat with MetLife Auto & Home,
would it be wise to cancel the policy in the winter? The boat
is only used from April to October. The rest of the year it
is stored out of the water. What is the risk?
[A]
Canceling your boat insurance in winter sounds like a clever
way to save money, doesn't it? Unfortunately, it's not. Thieves
don't take a break in winter -- they may steal your boat out
of a storage unit or drive off with your trailer from the
backyard. Your boat is always at risk of being damaged or
destroyed by fire, storm, or lightning, even when it's not
in the water.
There are better ways to pinch pennies. MetLife Auto & Home
offers boat
insurance discounts if you take an approved safety course,
if your boat is powered by a diesel engine, or if your boat
is outfitted with a VHF ship-to-shore radio, burglar alarm,
or other protective device.
[Q]
I live in a condo and came home one weekend
to find my bathroom window cracked. Who is responsible for
replacement, me or the condo association?
[A]
It depends on the language in the by-laws of your condo association.
Some condo associations have responsibility for all windows;
others put that responsibility on the individual condo owners.
Review your by-laws carefully to determine the extent of your
ownership, then consult a MetLife Auto & Home agent or representative
to discuss your condo
insurance coverage.
