[Q] My 19-year-old babysitter drives my children to school, soccer practice and dance lessons. Do I need to add her to my auto policy? Are there risks associated with her driving?

[A] This is a situation many parents find themselves in. Your MetLife Auto & Home auto policy would cover you in the event of an accident, whether you're driving the car, or your babysitter were driving the car with your permission. (See your policy for restrictions.) You don't need to add her to your auto policy unless it is made available for her regular use. However, you should be aware that drivers under the age of 25 have the highest rate of involvement in fatal crashes of any age group. So for safety's sake, minimize distractions by insisting that your babysitter not talk on a cell phone while driving, and keep the radio turned down low or, better yet, off.

[Q] I live across the street from a lake. I have never heard of significant flooding in this area, but how would I determine whether or not I should buy flood insurance?

[A] With spring's wet weather upon us, your question is timely, especially because most standard homeowners policies exclude flood coverage. You can find out whether your property is in a low-, moderate- or high-risk flood area by entering your address into FEMA's database. Keep in mind, however, that 25 percent of all flood claims are from people who don't live in high-risk areas. And because of the recent boom in new housing developments, the land's natural runoff pattern might have changed from what a 10-year-old flood map shows.

Flood insurance from MetLife Auto & Home could cost as little as $112 a year, and it covers more than just the structure of your home. It also covers debris removal, damage to your contents and more. Go to metlifeyourlife.com for details.

[Q] We travel to Florida in the winter. If our luggage is stolen out of our car or our hotel room, does our home or car insurance cover any of the loss?

[A] Sunshine and fresh oranges sound like heaven this time of year! Relax and enjoy your vacation, knowing that your MetLife Auto & Home homeowners or renters policy may cover personal property stolen from your car and hotel room. It's worth noting that your car insurance has a limit on theft of personal items, such as clothes and luggage, so this is a good example of why also having home or renters insurance is a good idea. And remember, you could save up to 10 percent on your premiums when you have multiple policies with us-savings that can help fund next year's trip.
